QoS Provisioning Techniques for Future Fiber-Wireless (FiWi) Access Networks

چکیده
A plethora of enabling optical and wireless access-metro network technologies have been emerging that can be used to build future-proof bimodal fiber-wireless (FiWi) networks. Hybrid FiWi networks aim at providing wired and wireless quad-play services over the same infrastructure simultaneously and hold great promise to mitigate the digital divide and change the way we live and work by replacing commuting with teleworking. After overviewing enabling optical and wireless network technologies and their QoS provisioning techniques, we elaborate on enabling radio-over-fiber (RoF) and radio-and-fiber (R&F) technologies. We describe and investigate new QoS provisioning techniques for future FiWi networks, ranging from traffic class mapping, scheduling, and resource management to advanced aggregation techniques, congestion control, and layer-2 path selection algorithms.

Backhaul-Aware Decoupled Uplink and Downlink User Association, Subcarrier Allocation, and Power Control in FiWi HetNets
Decoupling the uplink and downlink user association improves the throughput of heterogeneous networks (HetNets) and balances the traffic load of macro- and small- base stations. Recently, fiber-wireless HetNets (FiWi-HetNets) have been considered as viable solutions for access networks. To improve the accuracy of user association and resource allocation algorithms in FiWi-HetNets, the capacity ...

Future bimodal fiber-wireless (FiWi) access-metro networks may deploy both radio-over-fiber (RoF) and radio-andfiber (R&F) technologies. RoF networks are rapidly becoming mature, but they fall short of interworking with distributed wireless MAC protocols such as DCF in widely deployed IEEE 802.11 WLANs. While R&F networks are able to avoid this limitation by means of protocol translation at the...

متن کاملTechno-economic analysis of EPON and WiMAX for future Fiber-Wireless (FiWi) networks
Hybrid Fiber-Wireless (FiWi) networks become rapidly mature and represent a promising candidate for reducing power consumption, costs, and bandwidth bottlenecks of next-generation broadband access networks. Two key FiWi technologies with similar design goals are Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) and WiMAX. In this paper, we develop a powerful and flexible techno-economic analysis to compa...
متن کاملFiWi Access Networks Based on Next-Generation PON and Gigabit-Class WLAN Technologies: A Capacity and Delay Analysis (Extended Version)
Current Gigabit-class passive optical networks (PONs) evolve into next-generation PONs, whereby high-speed 10+ Gb/s time division multiplexing (TDM) and long-reach wavelength-broadcasting/routing wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) PONs are promising near-term candidates. On the other hand, next-generation wireless local area networks (WLANs) based on frame aggregation techniques will levera...
